FINAL MEETING – April 25th Meeting Recap

Hi Pre-Dents!

Thanks to all who made it to the last meeting tonight. Can’t believe this year is already coming to an end!

  • If you are looking for something to do this Friday, the pre-dental club is co-hosting an event with the BioChemistry Club. It’s a Brewing Seminar Friday 4/29 from 4:30-6 in Bruinincks Hall 312. If you are 21+, you can test test the beer! You can still come and learn about how to brew beer even if you aren’t 21.

You all have contributed your time, energy, and enthusiasm into the club and have made this an awesome school year, and we are so excited for what is to come next year. Good luck on all of your finals, DATs, shadowing, and whatever else you are doing!

We also owe a huge thank you to the great leadership of our president, Eric Bender, and VP, Nick Stokfisz, as they tirelessly worked to continually improve this club.

NEXT MEETING

March 28nd Meeting Recap

Hello Pre-Dents!

Thanks to all that came and participated in elections this past meeting. There was a great turnout with people running and voting. If you were unable to attend meeting, this is what you missed:

  • Jacob Jordan and Meera Damodaran (the President of Operation Smile) talked about an Operation Smile event called “Kick it with the Kids” on April 30th. It is a kickball tournament that costs $5 to play. You can assemble or join a team of 10 people. Check out the UMN Operation Smile Facebook page for more info.
  • The majority of meeting was dedicated to elections. Everyone who ran did a phenomenal job and congrats to everyone that won. Here are the winners:
    • President: Jacob Jordan

    • Treasurer: Anna Riester
    • Public Relations: Breanna Besel
    • Webmaster: Lizzy Purtell
    • Social Chair: Jordyn Dwyer
  • Our ‘Dinner w/ Dentists’ event is coming up soon!  It is April 18th in the Mississippi Room in Coffman from 6:30-7:45. It will be about $15 a head (free for dentists). Save the date and add to your Google Calendar!
    • We need YOUR HELP in getting dentists to this event. Please send this document (filled in with names) to any dentists you know that might be willing to participate in our event.:)
  • After elections, club members got together and practiced interview questions. Older members shared advice with younger members that they thought might be helpful for pre-dental students. If any group members would like to practice interview questions or receive pre-dental advice, just contact the club.
  • We have a Krispy Kreme fundraiser coming up to raise money for our upcoming Dinner with Dentists event. It’s $10/dozen ($12 for specialty). You can order yours with this Order Form. Pick-up date and location not set in stone, but likely Thursday and Friday, April 21st and 22nd.

February 22nd Meeting Recap

Hello Pre-Dents!

As usual it was great seeing you at our meeting on Monday. There was a lot of information packed into the meeting so if you couldn’t make the meeting, here’s what you missed:

  • Myke from the EPPA Medical Scribe Program spoke about the opportunities available working as a medical scribe. If you’d like more information please fill out this form (no obligation – just for more info). Alternatively, visit our Meeting Minutes page to see his flyer / contact info.
  • Officers Eric and Nick provided information and resources regarding studying for the DAT, picking a dental school, and applying. Their notes can be seen both in the posted PowerPoint and Meeting Minutes. Find these resources on our website’s Meeting Minutes page.
  •  The meeting ended with a tour of the dental school given by a current dental student.
  • Our ‘Dinner w/ Dentists’ event is set in stone!  Save the date and add to your Google Calendar!
    • We need YOUR HELP in getting dentists to this event. Please send this document (filled in with names) to any dentists you know that might be willing to participate in our event.:)
  • Fellow Pre-Dent member Tom Coyne presented the club with this opportunity. Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a Spring Break trip to El Paso, TX, from March 13th – 20th. You will be building homes and working on home maintenance projects. If you are interested, you can e-mail Thomas Coyne at thomas.coyne@uofmhabitat.org.
  • Eric Bender was nice enough to share with everyone a compiled list of all the dental schools in a google spreadsheet. The spreadsheet contains information about each dental school like their requirements and prices. You can access it here. This list is current as of August 2013, and you will need to cross-reference the information.

January 25th Meeting Recap

Hi all,

I hope everyone is having a great first couple weeks back at school. Thank you to the members that came to the meeting on Monday! We had quite a few new members, which is always great to see.

The majority of the meeting was dedicated to Dr. Kyle Smith speaking about shadowing and volunteering. He gave a ton of great advice about how to get started with each and add some great experience to your dental applications. You can check out the meeting minutes link here to review his presentation and to review the meeting minutes we wrote up.

If you signed up for a GKAS, remember the event is taking place next weekend!  2/6!  You should have received an e-mail regarding your volunteer assignment.  If not, email gkas@umn.edu.

December 7th Meeting Recap

Hi all,

Thank you to the members that came to the very informative meeting on Monday! Hopefully you have a better idea of what you can do to be a competitive applicant!

If you couldn’t make the meeting, here’s what you missed:

  • The Minnesota School of Dentistry is hosting the annual Give Kids A Smile Day on February 6, 2015. This is an incredible opportunity to volunteer in a dental setting. To learn more about volunteering or to get more information, please fill out this Google Form(There is no commitment to volunteering by filling out this form, simply a sign-up to get more information.)
  • Kate Hanson, from the School of Public Health, spoke about the DDS/MPH dual degree. This is a great option for anyone interested in working more holistically to address health issues in society.
  • Dr. Naty Lopez, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Diversity at the Minnesota School of Dentistry, presented on what makes a competitive applicant.  She had a LOT of great advice, I strongly encourage you to check out the meeting minutes link here to review her presentation and to review the meeting minutes we wrote up.
  • Members picked up their T-Shirts. Remember, if you ordered a long sleeve t-shirt you must pay $3 when you pick it up! If you couldn’t make the meeting Nick Stokfisz and Eric Bender will be in Goldy’s Gameroom (to the right when you walk in) from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm on Wednesday, 12/16 and from 2 pm – 4 pm on Friday 12/18.

November 16th Meeting Recap/Upcoming Events

Hello all,

I hope everyone brushed and flossed their teeth after eating all those sweets at the ice cream sundae bar.

At the meeting, a fellow PDC member Tom Coyne talked about a great volunteering opportunity with Habitat for Humanity over winter break. If you have any questions for him, you can contact trips@uofmhabitat.org. The rest of the meeting was dedicated to eating ice cream sundaes, getting to know fellow predents, and working on some practice DAT problems. Tom’s slides about the Habitat for Humanity trip, and the practice DAT problems can be found in the meeting minutes here.

Remember to mark your calendars for Thursday, December 3th at 7:15 for our social event at Applebee’s. It will be a great night filled with good food and even better company! (Food won’t be provided free) You can RSVP here.

The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, December 7th, Dr. Naty Lopez (Assistant Dean of Admissions for the UMN Dental School) will be coming to speak about what it takes to be a competitive applicant. This a meeting you don’t want to miss! Hope to see you all there!

October 19th Meeting Recap / Upcoming Events

Hi all,

As always, it was great seeing everyone at our meeting on Monday.

At the meeting, we had a Kaplan brand ambassador talk about what Kaplan has to offer for DAT test prep materials, a student talked about a new club called C.U.R.E.D, and a couple more students talked about a new club called Operation Smile. The majority of the meeting was dedicated to our Dental Student Panel. Club members got to ask the dental students many questions and hear their stories about getting into dental school and about being in dental school now. The info and contacts can be found in the meeting minutes here.

We also voted on t-shirt designs and narrowed the options down to two. Keep an eye out for an email within the next couple days to make your final vote on the t-shirts. In order to get a t-shirt, you must pay your membership fee. If you have not paid yet and would like a t-shirt, you can contact a pre-dental officer by emailing them or send us a message on Facebook.

 

NEXT MEETING
The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, November 16th, half of the next meeting will be an ice cream social, and the other half we will work through sample DAT problems. Hope to see you all there!

September 21st Meeting Recap / Upcoming Events

Hi all,

It was great seeing you at our meeting on Monday. We had almost 65 members attend and the meeting was a success, thanks for stopping by!

At the meeting, we gave an overview of the pre-dental club, went over our goals for the year and membership info. We also had ASDA (American Student Dental Association) reps talk about the benefits of joining the pre-dental chapter of ASDA, and Navy and Army reps discussed scholarship opportunities through the U.S. military. The founder of a new student The Network promoted her group. The info and contacts can be found in the attached meeting slides, or in the meeting minutes here.

One of our goals for the year is to do more social events with the pre-dental club as a whole, so everyone can get to know each other more. Please take this survey so we can put our efforts into planning events you guys want to go to. (Take survey here)
