I hope everyone is having a great first couple weeks back at school. Thank you to the members that came to the meeting on Monday! We had quite a few new members, which is always great to see.
The majority of the meeting was dedicated to Dr. Kyle Smith speaking about shadowing and volunteering. He gave a ton of great advice about how to get started with each and add some great experience to your dental applications. If you couldn’t make the meeting, here’s what you missed:
- The Minnesota School of Dentistry is hosting the annual Give Kids A Smile Day on February 6, 2015. This is an incredible opportunity to volunteer in a dental setting. To learn more about volunteering or to get more information, please fill out this Google Form. (There is no commitment to volunteering by filling out this form, simply a sign-up to get more information.)
- Kate Hanson, from the School of Public Health, spoke about the DDS/MPH dual degree. This is a great option for anyone interested in working more holistically to address health issues in society.
- Dr. Naty Lopez, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Diversity at the Minnesota School of Dentistry, presented on what makes a competitive applicant. She had a LOT of great advice, I strongly encourage you to check out the meeting minutes link here to review her presentation and to review the meeting minutes we wrote up.
- Members picked up their T-Shirts. Remember, if you ordered a long sleeve t-shirt you must pay $3 when you pick it up! If you couldn’t make the meeting Nick Stokfisz and Eric Bender will be in Goldy’s Gameroom (to the right when you walk in) from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm on Wednesday, 12/16 and from 2 pm – 4 pm on Friday 12/18.
The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, January 25.

I hope everyone brushed and flossed their teeth after eating all those sweets at the ice cream sundae bar.
At the meeting, a fellow PDC member Tom Coyne talked about a great volunteering opportunity with Habitat for Humanity over winter break. If you have any questions for him, you can contact firstname.lastname@example.org. The rest of the meeting was dedicated to eating ice cream sundaes, getting to know fellow predents, and working on some practice DAT problems. Tom’s slides about the Habitat for Humanity trip, and the practice DAT problems can be found in the meeting minutes here.
Remember to mark your calendars for Thursday, December 3th at 7:15 for our social event at Applebee’s. It will be a great night filled with good food and even better company! (Food won’t be provided free) You can RSVP here.
The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, December 7th, Dr. Naty Lopez (Assistant Dean of Admissions for the UMN Dental School) will be coming to speak about what it takes to be a competitive applicant. This a meeting you don’t want to miss! Hope to see you all there!
As always, it was great seeing everyone at our meeting on Monday.
At the meeting, we had a Kaplan brand ambassador talk about what Kaplan has to offer for DAT test prep materials, a student talked about a new club called C.U.R.E.D, and a couple more students talked about a new club called Operation Smile. The majority of the meeting was dedicated to our Dental Student Panel. Club members got to ask the dental students many questions and hear their stories about getting into dental school and about being in dental school now. We also voted on t-shirt designs and narrowed the options down to two. Keep an eye out for an email within the next couple days to make your final vote on the t-shirts. In order to get a t-shirt, you must pay your membership fee. If you have not paid yet and would like a t-shirt, you can contact a pre-dental officer by emailing them or send us a message on Facebook.
The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, November 16th, half of the next meeting will be an ice cream social, and the other half we will work through sample DAT problems. Hope to see you all there!

It was great seeing you at our meeting on Monday. We had almost 65 members attend and the meeting was a success, thanks for stopping by!
At the meeting, we gave an overview of the pre-dental club, went over our goals for the year and membership info. We also had ASDA (American Student Dental Association) reps talk about the benefits of joining the pre-dental chapter of ASDA, and Navy and Army reps discussed scholarship opportunities through the U.S. military. The founder of a new student The Network promoted her group. The info and contacts can be found in the attached meeting slides, or in the meeting minutes here.
One of our goals for the year is to do more social events with the pre-dental club as a whole, so everyone can get to know each other more. Please take this survey so we can put our efforts into planning events you guys want to go to. (Take survey here)
The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held on Monday, October 19, we will be hosting a panel of dental students and break into groups with dental students to learn more about what dental schools is like! Hope to see you all there!

MISSION OF MERCY
Several members of the club have expressed interest in carpooling up to Mission of Mercy (July 16-18 in Duluth) and volunteering together. If you would like to join us, post in the Facebook group or e-mail one of the officers.

Just a reminder that Pre-Dental Club elections will be held at our last meeting of the year: Monday, April 27 from 6-7pm in MCB 2-120.
If you are not running for an officer position, we encourage you to attend this meeting to vote for your peers and get information about productive ways to spend your summer strengthening your application, including getting involved in research. A couple of our graduating officers who will be attending dental school next year will be available to answer your questions! As always, there will be food.

OFFICER ELECTION INFO
Elections for the 2015-2016 Pre-Dental Club board will be held at our next meeting on Monday, April 27 at 6 pm
in MCB 2-120. The officer positions are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations, and Webmaster. If you are interested in running for an officer position(s), please email Petra at email@example.com indicating which position(s) you will be running for.
During the elections, each candidate will give a brief (5 minute max) speech introducing him/herself and indicating why he/she would be a good fit for the position. In order to be an eligible candidate, you must be a paid member of the Pre-Dental Club who has attended at least 4 Pre-Dental Club meetings/events this year, and you must be a full-time University of Minnesota student next year.
Just a reminder that DAT study groups will continue to be held on Mondays from 6-8 pm in MCB 2-120. There are plenty of prep books that can be checked out for FREE from the Health Careers Center on the 2nd floor of Moos.

SUMMER DENTAL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
Dear University of MN Pre-dental Club Members, Hello! We are offering a two-week Summer Dental School Experience program at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry for rising juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a career in dentistry. This program contains the following features (plus more):
- It’s FREE!
- DAT preparation through mini review sessions in biology and chemistry (general and organic chemistry)
- Hands-on experiences to develop psychomotor skills
- Writing sessions for personal statements and essays
- Individual advising session with the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Diversity
- Oral health disparities discussions and potential research topics
