October, November, and December Meeting Recap

Hi Everyone!

A little late to post, but here are some recaps of previous meetings and some additional information you might find helpful.

If you missed October’s meeting we had a great panel of current Minnesota dental students answering questions about dental school and the journey to get there.

For November’s meeting we had Dr. Naty Lopez, the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Diversity at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, come to speak about how to be a competitive applicant for dental schools.  Meeting minutes and PowerPoint Presentation can be found here.

Also, thank you to all who came to our meeting/workshop on Monday, December 1st.  We reviewed how to sign up for your DENTPIN and how to fill out a competitive application.

Here are some of the links from the meeting:

The next Pre-Dental Club meeting will be held after break, we’ll keep you posted when we finalize a date.

Good luck on finals and Happy Holidays!

Listen to words from real professionals (medical doctor, dentist, pharmacist, registered nurse, physician assistant and dietitian).

Did you enjoy Give Kids a Smile Day (GKASD)? This is another event similar to GKASD. This event is a day where dentists provide free dental care to patients that “without medically compromising conditions receive dental treatment for whatever reason that they cannot obtain (MN Mom website).

When: Friday and/or Saturday July 25-26 (clinic days)

How: Register here http://www.mndental.org/mnmom on April 28th when the registration opens!

Where: Verizon Wireless Center: 1 Civic Center Plaza Mankato, MN 56001

You sign up for however many shifts and what times you are able to serve.

What is it about? A chance for many dentists, dental staff, and pre-dental student volunteers to give back to the community. You will be assigned a role such as being a patient escort and will be provided guidelines to serve the patients-enjoy this wonderful experience. A testimony about what I did two years ago is below:

My testimony: I participated in the first Mission of Mercy held in MN in 2012. I was assigned to be a patient escort. There are many different areas where you have the opportunity to escort patients from one station to the next and help them be on their way.

It was a fun and exciting experience to be given a strong leadership role. After the lines died down, I assisted with transporting used dental instruments to the dental sterilization instruments table. Patients will also need to know certain areas such as restroom or the waiting room to find their other family members that are also waiting for them.

There are different shift times that you can sign up for. I signed up for 5 a.m.-12 p.m. for a one-day shift and was able to network with other dentists too. If you want to volunteer for both shifts you are able to stay at a hotel nearby. Depending on your shift: breakfast, lunch and a free T-shirt will be provided!

This was an experience that I knew I was giving back to the community! I had such a great experience that I wanted to share this event with you all.

For those that are looking for more leadership experience, building confidence in the ability to guide patients and watch other passionate dentists work on these patients, this is an event that you don’t want to miss!

If you have any further questions, please contact me- Jessica Nguyen: nguy1716@umn.edu

Good luck with the rest of your exams and see you at the last meeting (Practicing Dentist Board and Elections) Monday, April 21st at 6-7 p.m. in MCB  2-120.

It’s been a pleasure to serve you all this year.

Save the Date: Collaborative Healthcare Event

Hi Pre-Dental student friends!

There is a great opportunity that I wanted to share with you all. Pre-Pharmacy is hosting a Collaborative Healthcare event where other pre-health students and guest speakers from different health professions will be attending. This is a beneficial event because every health profession must work as a team in order to provide the best quality care for a patient.

Join us in discussing a case study that needs the collaboration of every health profession to determine how to treat a certain patient case. This is your start to see what it’s like to be part of a interprofessional-related case study and to meet with other pre-health professions.

There will also be an in-depth section specific to each profession, so I hope to see you, Pre-Dent students represent and wear your Pre-Dent T-Shirts!

Space is limited, so please sign up early!

The date of the event will be on Thursday, April 17th from 6-8 p.m. in STSS 412.

Please RSVP for the event at http://z.umn.edu/chcevent, there will be limited spots. More information on the event can be found at this link, http://prepharm.wordpress.com/benefits-of-membership/collaborative-health-care-event/.

Have a great Spring Break and see you at the Collaborative Healthcare event!
